Summer Boating Tips: Maintenance & Service

As the days grow longer and the temperatures rise, summer is just around the corner—and that means it’s time to hit the water! For many boat owners, the winter months involve storing their boats and occasionally taking them out for a quick spin. However, limited usage in colder conditions can lead to engine stress and accelerated wear on various components.

Whether you’re new to boating or an experienced sailor, it’s essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on the water. Melbourne is a prime destination for water sports, especially during summer, so knowing how to properly maintain and service your boat is crucial.

To get your boat ready for summer, follow these essential maintenance and service tips. Whether you’re preparing for your first outing or are already enjoying the waves, these insights will help make your boating adventures smooth and hassle-free.

1. Conduct a Thorough Check-Up

Before you set sail, perform a comprehensive inspection of your boat. Keeping an eye out for potential hazards is vital for safety. Consider investing in Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) and Man Overboard (MOB) devices for emergency location tracking. An Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) is also a wise addition to your safety gear.

Boat Maintenance and Servicing

  • Ensuring your boat is in top shape is one of the most critical aspects of summer boating:
  • Choose a Suitable Marina Spot: Find a location away from water and fenders to give your boat a good stretch and check all components.
  • Drain the Bilges: Maintain a clean workspace, ideally one where you can stand comfortably.
  • Service Essential Equipment: Don’t delay servicing your anchor, compass, air fins, and safety gear like life jackets.
  • Prepare Your Tools: Have basic tools on hand, such as a hand broom, spray bottles, hoses, life rings, and water pumps, for any unexpected needs.

2. Avoid Procrastination

Mechanical systems can deteriorate if not properly maintained. Keep a log of your maintenance activities so you and your family are informed about upcoming tasks. The ideal time for basic maintenance is March and April, allowing engine oil to circulate properly and reducing contamination.

Take the time to disassemble components for cleaning, including the intake screen and cooling systems. Regularly check and rotate oil, filters, and belts, and ensure you clean the injectors and filters as well. A quick application of caulk can also help seal any areas that may be prone to leaks during the hot summer months.

3. Pre-Departure Checklist

To ensure your boat is ready for summer, perform monthly maintenance checks. Here are some tips for both powerboats and yachts:

  • Inspect Running Rigging: Especially important for yachts.
  • Clean the Hull: Don’t forget to check the propeller.
  • Check for Leaks: Inspect the engine and cooling system thoroughly.
  • Fuel and Batteries: Ensure your vessel is well-fueled and that batteries are charged.
  • Safety Equipment: Verify that you have all required safety gear onboard.
  • Know Local Regulations-Familiarise yourself with state and local waterway rules.

4. Check you have current insurance for your boat.

If you are in a marina or dry-stack, the marine will generally request to see your current Certificate of Insurance as the renewal date is nearing. Marina’s typically require $20 million public liability insurance to access the marina.

Is your current policy sufficient? Check in with Tudor Insurance and see if it should be reviewed.

Enjoy your summer on the water!
